Motorcyclist Deaths and Serious Injuries Rise
Recent Incidents Highlight Danger on Valley Roads
In recent months, there has been a rise in motorcyclist deaths and serious injuries in the Phoenix area. This past Saturday afternoon, two separate motorcycle crashes left one rider in the hospital in Peoria and another dead in Gilbert.
The first crash occurred on Interstate 17 near Union Hills Drive. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), a motorcyclist was traveling southbound when they lost control and crashed. The rider was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.
The second crash occurred on Loop 303 in the West Valley. DPS reported that two motorcyclists were speeding on the freeway when they collided with each other. One of the riders was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
These are just two of several recent motorcycle crashes in the Phoenix area. In December, a motorcyclist was killed in a hit-and-run crash near 13th Street. In November, a DPS trooper was involved in a motorcycle crash that shut down several lanes on I-10 westbound near 43rd Avenue.
What is causing the increase in motorcycle deaths and injuries?
There are a number of factors that may be contributing to the increase in motorcycle deaths and injuries in the Phoenix area:
- Increased traffic congestion: With more cars on the road, motorcyclists are more likely to be involved in accidents.
- Speeding: Motorcyclists are often traveling at high speeds, which increases their risk of crashing.
- Impaired driving: Alcohol and drug use can significantly impair a motorcyclist's ability to operate a vehicle safely.
- Lack of visibility: Motorcyclists are often difficult to see, especially at night.
- Inexperience: Many motorcyclists are inexperienced, which increases their risk of crashing.
How can we reduce the number of motorcycle deaths and injuries?
There are a number of things that can be done to reduce the number of motorcycle deaths and injuries:
- Motorcyclists should wear helmets: Helmets can reduce the risk of head injury in a crash.
- Motorcyclists should obey the speed limit: Speeding increases the risk of crashing.
- Motorcyclists should avoid riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs: Alcohol and drug use can significantly impair a motorcyclist's ability to operate a vehicle safely.
- Drivers should be aware of motorcycles: Drivers should always be on the lookout for motorcycles, especially at intersections.
- Motorcyclists should take a safety course: Safety courses can teach motorcyclists how to ride safely and avoid crashes.
