Amazon EBS: Volume Types
HDD and SSD
Amazon EBS provides the following volume types: Previous generation hard disk drives (HDD) and solid state drives (SSD).
SSD Backed Volumes
Amazon EBS allows you to create storage volumes and attach them to Amazon EC2 instances. These volumes can be used to store data, applications, and operating systems.
Provisioned IOPS Volumes
Provisioned IOPS volumes are backed by solid-state drives (SSDs) and are designed for workloads that require high levels of performance and low latency. These volumes provide consistent, low-latency performance, even under heavy load.
Recommended Volume Types
For workloads on AWS, there are two types of Amazon EBS volumes that are recommended:
- General Purpose (SSD) volumes are designed for a wide range of workloads, including web servers, databases, and file servers.
- Provisioned IOPS volumes are designed for workloads that require high levels of performance and low latency, such as online transaction processing (OLTP) databases and real-time analytics.
Conclusion
By understanding the different types of Amazon EBS volumes, you can choose the right type of volume for your workload and budget. Amazon EBS provides a variety of volume types to meet the needs of different applications and workloads.
