Ten Hag keeps Højlund and Mount under wraps in aim to avoid injury crisis
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed that he is taking a cautious approach with new signings Rasmus Højlund and Mason Mount, in order to avoid a repeat of the injury crisis that plagued the club last season.
Both players have been limited to cameos in pre-season so far, with Ten Hag keen to ensure that they are fully fit and ready for the start of the new campaign.
Højlund, a 19-year-old striker signed from Atalanta for a fee of £35 million, has impressed in training but Ten Hag is keen to avoid rushing him back into action too soon.
"Rasmus is a young player with a lot of potential, but we have to be careful with him," said Ten Hag. "He has had a few minor injuries in the past, so we are taking a cautious approach with him."
Mount, a 24-year-old midfielder signed from Chelsea for a fee of £50 million, is also being eased back into training after a busy summer with England.
"Mason is a fantastic player, but he has played a lot of football in recent months," said Ten Hag. "We need to make sure that he is fully recovered from the summer and ready to hit the ground running for us."
Ten Hag's cautious approach is understandable, given the injury crisis that plagued United last season. The club were without a number of key players for large parts of the campaign, including Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
Ten Hag is determined to avoid a similar situation this season, and he is taking no chances with his new signings. He is confident that both Højlund and Mount will be valuable additions to the squad, but he is not prepared to rush them back into action too soon.
"We have a long season ahead of us, and we need to make sure that our players are fit and healthy," said Ten Hag. "We can't afford to have any more injuries."
